Washed Out

Some of my favorite color schemes don't photograph well. They are subtle, soft, natural, soothing, dreamy combinations...washed-out, subdued colors that lend a peaceful, calm tone to a card, and can invoke memories of times gone by.

Part of me wishes I'd win the lottery so I could travel the world and see those landmarks and museums I can only read about. My only international trips have been to British Columbia (Mother Nature at her finest) and a one-week high-school trip to Great Britain (but Big Ben was decorated with scaffolding at the time).

When I bought this stamp from Hero Arts, I wondered why it appealed to me so strongly. It's not exactly a practical stamp for me. But it speaks to my longing to travel, my desire to see the past in the present, to catch a glimpse, however weathered and worn, of another world. Travel--just the thought of it--makes me nostalgic for places I've never been.

Mellow moss, kraft, and ivory. They many not photograph in the most exciting way, but they convey how I feel about my journey: dreamy, hopeful, realistic, nostalgic. And yes, I'm enjoying my journey. Enormously.

If you could travel to one place you've never been on this blue and green marble in space, where would you go? For me, it might be Rome. I loved the layering of history I saw in London, and I imagine it's even more amazing to stand on a spot and see 2,500 years of human history stratified in one place. But ask me again in another moment, and I'll likely give a different answer. This world has more than enough amazement for many lives. We only get one life (unless, of course, you're Buddhist), and we might as well enjoy our journey through it.

Now it's your turn. Where would you go?

P.S. I will be taking a little blogging vacation this weekend. Be back on Monday!

  1. I'd like to go to Vancouver and Maine and Hawaii and Vienna just for starters. And then there is San Fran, San Diego, the CA coast, Portland, Austin. Hmm. Scotland and ok, you get the drift. Everywhere!

  2. I love your use of colors Susan. Your image on the white makes is stand out. I too love to travel. I enjoyed Victoria BC, England and Denmark. I can get lost in the colors they use on buildings etc. My trip to Denmark...went on a ferry to Sweden and it was the first time I paid to use the bathroom.

  4. outside the U.S. travel, it would be Greece, or Italy, or Ireland. I'd have to flip coins or play "Rock, Paper, Scissors" with the DH to determine where to go!
Inside the U.S. I long to be in the New England states, especially in the fall.

  7. I have some Scot blood in me, so Scotland and the rest of the UK is tops on my list. Then back to see the Alps, and I'd love to visit those beautiful little villages in Italy that go up the side of a hill beside the water......such a big wide world! Love that particular shade of green, Susan!

  9. I'm glad you liked BC so much, Susan; it's one of my favourite Canadian destinations. I would love to see the fields of lavender in high summer in Provence -- and I hear the wine there is good, too. :P
What a lovely use of this stamp! Subtle is hard to capture in a photograph, but I think you captured it here!

  12. What a fun silhouette image! I've seen a few of these landmarks in my travls.... Canada is soooo young in it's history! I remember how I dealt with counter culture shock when I got back to BC after living in The Netherlands for a year while I worked with Billy Graham. Felt like we had no history, especially after having gone to see a church where Christopher Columbus once attended and the stone steps to get into the church had about a one inch indent from people stepping on them over thousands of years. Mind blowing, to say the least!

Where would I go? Back to the land of my birth - Costa Rica and have always wanted to go to Africa to see the big five wild animals and drink in the culture of that amazing continent.

Hope your summer is going well :)

  14. I'd love to go to Europe - Holland and Germany especially. I'd also HAVE to visit England - mostly the parts where James Herriot's books are set....

  15. It's funny...I grew up in Pennsylvania and lived in New Jersey for 25 years of my adult life. Throughout that time, I just couldn't wait to move to the Southwest. It just called me. (Too many Clint Eastwood movies?) I now live in AZ...and today I am so homesick for NJ I can hardly stand it So, If I could visit anywhere in the world...right now...it would be to the rolling hills of central New Jersey. Sometimes we just can't see what's RIGHT THERE in front of us.

  17. That's a great card and so interesting to read about where you folks wanted to visit. Joan, how could you forget my land? LOL!! ...Sheila H - don't think a visit to The Pyramids is exactly as safe as one would want it to be at the minute. Rome is ok....but Florence is the place to be...much better than Rome. I've been to the U.S. many times but wouldn't pass up another trip, why? I get to shop for all the goodies first hand so much cheaper than over here. I love to travel and I do like to come home too. We will be visiting Croatia (or Yugoslavia as it was called) in September.

  18. First - Washington State to be with my family. Then I've always wanted to see where my grandparents came from - one set from Sweden and the other from England. I've also always wanted to see the "land down under". Beautiful card, BTW.

  19. How's that - I had that stamp out last night - planning on putting it on my London landmark scrap page! But so many more places to visit . . . Italy, French Provence (lavender fields), Canada in the fall (need to see those colours when you live on a tropical island!), back to Cape Town, to the 4 tennis Grand Slams . . .

  20. I'd reiterate what Joyce said, I love to travel and I love to come back home. I'd love to visit England and the Czech Republic again--the places of my ancestors. My next trip is to China to see my first grandchild.

    Such a lovely card!

  21. Great choice of colors for your card. I agree about the subtle colors washing out in photos. :(

I'm blessed to have traveled extensively in my life. Even more now that the boys are grown, through college and well on their way with their own adult lives. However I have never been to Africa and I would love to see Victoria Falls. No clue why, since almost all of my travel has been Europe's old fabulous cities; but something about the falls seems to draw me.

  22. I bought this stamp too! I've been to most of the places pictures, traveled a lot before I had kids. I have also tried to photograph a similar color scheme and had the same problem.

Alaska. Hawaii. Turkey. Africa (I want to go on safari). New Zealand. I've never been south of the equator despite having been to Ethiopia and the Philippines, which got me close. I need to see if what they say about toilets is true!

The world is a great big place and I'm game for going just about anywhere.

    Have a nice weekend.

  23. What a wonderful stamp! Your colors are perfect for it.

I've been blessed with travel, too. It amazes me when I begin to make a list, having grown up in rural Virginia and never dreaming of leaving that state! England, Scotland, France, Italy, several Caribbean islands, Hawaii, Alaska. DH and I are working on visiting our national parks. So much natural beauty! Outside the US, I would love to see Germany and Switzerland, but I'm content with the national parks for now.

  27. Since I grew up in Germany, I have traveled to some of the European countries already, but not nearly enough! I would love to visit Norway to see the Fjords. My husbands Grandpa was Norwegian, so we could visit some relatives there as well.
The other place I always dream about seeing is the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. Pictures I have seen are spectacular! A high school friend of mine has actually been there. Of course she has traveled to most of the continents already. She is single and does not have kids. sigh.

    Petra

  29. Great card. I've seen that stamp, but like you, thought it wasn't practical... especially since I'm trying to restrain my stamping spending at least a little these days. And wow, I don't know that I could choose just one place I'd want to go. There are so many places I'd love to see. I've always wanted to travel the world. I have been fortunate enough to make trips to several European countries and would love to go back and see more. But, I guess if I could only choose one place, I'd want to go to Australia. I've always wanted to see Australia since reading books about it as a young girl. It will probably never happen but I'll keep hoping.

  30. Oh, and I would go to Spain (again!) Portugal, Italy, Scotland...oh wait, I was only to pick one?? And I haven't been there?? Well, then Spain is out because so far I've been there to complete the Camino de Santiago (Camino Frances route), the Costa del Sol - Malaga & Mijas - to get married and Barcelona to honeymoon. We're hoping to head back in April to Madrid-Salamanca-Toledo-Segovia with a side trip to Lisbon. So I guess, Lisbon, Portugal. I've only been travelling for about 4 years, but I've definitely got the bug!
